DC Area Out of Power, Obama on Vacation

With much of the East Coast still struggling to recover from recent storms that cut power to millions of residents during a heat wave, President Barack Obama is wrapping up a comfortable vacation in Camp David. He was not too busy to visit the scene of wildfires in swing-state Colorado--and make some fundraising calls from Air Force One en route--but he somehow could not muster the strength to address the state of emergency closer to home.

Twenty-two people have died, and residents around Washington, DC are struggling to navigate roads whose signals have not worked for days. If not for the July 4th week, the disruption would have been even worse. But President Obama has left the messy job of handling the emergency to state and local officials. Damage that has been described as "worse than some hurricanes" has not moved Obama to interrupt his air-conditioned holiday.
This dereliction of duty is not happening in distant New Orleans, but right in the heart of the nation's media and political center. Yet the mainstream media has not bothered to comment on Obama's absence. As for the Obama campaign itself, it hawked t-shirts to "keep cool" while the Romney campaign actually took the disaster seriously, organizing a drive for donations of basic necessities to stranded residents, such as canned food and water.
“They kind of forgot about us out here,” Falls Church, VA resident Eric Nesson said, pondering his plight. Maybe President Obama is taking the support of Northern Virginia--one of the hardest-hit areas--for granted, given its strong shift towards the Democratic Party in recent years, with an influx of federal employees. Maybe he is counting on the slavish mainstream media to continue to cover for him. But with DC out of power, and Obama on vacation, at least some locals are beginning to wonder whether it shouldn't be the other way around.

The greatest environmental threat that we are facing is genetic modification.  All over the globe, scientists are treating the fabric of life as if it was a playground where anything goes.

Behind closed doors, scientists all over the planet are creating some of the most freakish and most bizarre monsters that you could possible imagine, and very few people seem concerned about it.  But the truth is that messing with the building blocks of life is going to have some very serious consequences.  Scientists claim that they are making our crops stronger, more productive and less vulnerable to insects.  Scientists claim that they can alter our animals so that they are more “useful” to us.  Scientists claim that genetic modification is only going to “enhance” humanity.  But what if something goes seriously wrong?  For example, what if we learn that eating genetically modified food is really, really bad for us?  Well, at this point more than 70 percent of the processed foods sold in the United States contain at least one ingredient that has been genetically modified.  It would be kind of hard to go back now.  We have rushed ahead and have created hordes of freakish genetic monsters without ever seriously considering the consequences.  Someday, future generations may look back on us and wonder how we could have ever been so incredibly foolish.

We were promised that genetically modified crops would enable us to feed the world.  Well, the world is still starving, but we sure have seen super weeds, super pests and super diseases all develop as a result of genetic modification.
A recent article by George Dvorsky discussed how bollworms in China are now becoming resistant to the toxins grown inside Bt cotton….

As far as the real world mutated bollworms are concerned, they’re starting to take off in China. The researchers discovered that resistance-conferring mutations in cotton bollworm were three times more common in northern China than in areas of northwestern China where less Bt cotton has been grown.

A recent NPR article detailed how we are seeing something similar happen in the United States.  Rootworms are becoming resistant to the toxins grown inside Bt corn, and this is starting to cause major problems….

The scientists who called for caution now are saying “I told you so,” because there are signs that a new strain of resistant rootworms is emerging. In eastern Iowa, northwestern Illinois, and parts of Minnesota and Nebraska, rows of Bt corn have toppled over, their roots eaten by rootworms. Entomologist Aaron Gassmann at Iowa State University, who authored the PLoS One paper, collected insects from some of these fields and found many with a greater-than-expected ability to tolerate Bt.

This wasn’t supposed to happen.
But it is happening.
Meanwhile, we are also now learning that Bt corn may not be quite as “safe” for humans as we had been promised.  The following is from a recent article by Dr. Mercola….

Obamacare Opinion Makes Voters More Apt to Back Romney

According to a newly released Newsweek/Daily Beast poll of likely voters, the Supreme Court’s Obamacare ruling makes Americans more likely to vote for Mitt Romney and less likely to vote for President Obama. By a margin of 21 points (32 to 11 percent), voters say that they are now more, rather than less, apt to vote for Romney. By a margin of 15 percentage points (29 to 14 percent), voters say that they are now less, rather than more, apt to vote for Obama.

Moreover, 59 percent of likely voters say that the Court’s ruling will be at least “somewhat important” in deciding their vote for president, while only 36 percent say that the ruling will not be at least “somewhat important” in deciding their vote. 

Of course, the ruling’s lasting impact on the presidential election will presumably depend in large part on how effective Romney and other Republicans are at keeping the focus on Obamacare — and offering up a vision of real reform — and how effective Obama is at keeping the focus on other issues.

 

Obamacare: Demasiadas promesas rotas

El jefe de Gabinete de la Casa Blanca Jack Lew y otros voceros se hicieron eco de este lema. Y eso a pesar de la sentencia de la semana pasada por parte de la Corte Suprema que consideraba inconstitucional el mandato según tanto la Cláusula de Comercio como la Cláusula Propia y Necesaria, pero sentenció que podría seguir en pie como parte de la autoridad del Congreso para “poner y recaudar impuestos”.
Tildar al mandato individual de impuesto salvó la ley de salud del presidente, pero se trata de un concepto que el mismo presidente Obama había negado con firmeza. En una entrevista de 2009, el presidente Obama argumentó que su mandato individual no era una subida de impuestos, afirmando: “Rechazo absolutamente esa idea”.
Pero tras la semana pasada, el presidente Obama debe admitir ahora que es un impuesto o admitir que el mandato es inconstitucional. Sólo puede ser o bien lo uno o lo otro.
El mandato es en realidad un impuesto y es sólo uno de los muchos nuevos impuestos con los que se golpea a la clase media en Obamacare. Y quién lo iba a decir, otra promesa rota. El presidente Obama afirma que el mandato hace que la gente sea responsable, por lo que en consonancia con ese espíritu, he aquí un recordatorio de las otras promesas que el presidente y su ley de salud son responsables de haber roto:

Promesa nº1: “Con mi plan, ninguna familia que gane menos de $250,000 al año verá subida de impuestos alguna”.
La realidad: El mandato individual no está para nada solo en la larga lista de la Fundación Heritage sobre los nuevos impuestos y penalizaciones de Obamacare, muchos de los cuales impactarán terriblemente sobre la clase media. En conjunto, los impuestos y penalizaciones de Obamacare sumarán $500,000 millones adicionales en nuevos ingresos durante un período de 10 años. Ayer, un importante economista del Wall Street Journal reveló que el 75% de los nuevos impuestos de Obamacare serán pagados por las familias americanas que ganan por debajo de $120,000 al año. Entre los impuestos que golpearán a la clase media están el mandato individual, un impuesto especial del 2.3% sobre los dispositivos médicos, un impuesto especial del 10% sobre los salones de bronceado y una subida del suelo de las deducciones médicas desde el 7.5% hasta el 10% de los ingresos brutos ajustados.

Promesa nº2: “Si le gusta su plan de salud, podrá mantener su sistema de atención médica, punto”.
La realidad: La investigación continúa mostrando que hasta el 30% de los empleadores dejarán a sus empleados sin su actual cobertura de salud. La misma administración ha admitido que “en la práctica, una mayoría de los planes médicos de grupo perderá su estatus paternalista hacia 2013.

Promesa nº3: “No firmaré ningún plan que añada un céntimo a nuestros déficits, ni ahora ni en el futuro”.
La realidad: Como explican los analistas de la Fundación Heritage, “Un examen exhaustivo de lo que expresó [la Oficina de Presupuesto del Congreso], así como de otras pruebas, deja claro que la reducción del déficit asociada a [Obamacare] se basa en trucos presupuestarios, prestidigitaciones, trampas contables y suposiciones completamente imposibles. Unas estimaciones más honestas revelan que la nueva ley es un destrozo presupuestario de un billón de dólares”.

Promesa nº4: “Protegeré Medicare”.
La realidad: La Fundación Heritage ya ha demostrado en las varias formas en las que Obamacare acaba con Medicare tal como lo conocemos, incluidas las severas rebajas en los reembolsos de los médicos que amenazan el acceso de las personas mayores a la atención médica y colocan a una junta de burócratas no electos a cargo del cumplimiento del nuevo tope de gasto de Medicare.

Promesa nº5: “Firmaré la aprobación de una ley de atención médica universal hacia el final de mi primer mandato como presidente que cubrirá a cada americano y reducirá el costo de la prima de una familia típica en hasta $2,500 al año”.
La realidad: Obamacare no logra la cobertura universal; deja a 26 millones de americanos sin seguro. Además, la investigación de la Fundación Heritage esboza 12 formas en las que Obamacare incrementará las primas en vez de reducir los costos de la atención médica. Los requerimientos para que los planes permitan que los jóvenes estén en la cobertura de sus padres y ofrezcan servicios preventivos sin reparto de los costos ya están llevando a un mayor crecimiento de las primas.
Cuando fueron encuestados, el 70% de los americanos mantenía una opinión desfavorable sobre el mandato individual. Es dudoso que ahora llamarlo “impuesto” vaya a cambiar drásticamente esa opinión. Ahora que Obamacare y sus promesas rotas forman parte de la jurisprudencia, le corresponde al pueblo americano asegurarse de que la ley es finalmente derogada por el Congreso. Luego, puede avanzar en una auténtica reforma que ponga las necesidades de los pacientes en primer lugar.
