Los Jovenes necesitan Firmeza y Claridad

El joven de 23 años que puso las cosas claras a cardenales y obispos en el Vaticano - ReL

Del 7 al 28 de octubre de 2012 se tuvo en el Vaticano el sínodo de los obispos sobre el tema de la nueva evangelización en el tercer milenio. Cardenales y obispos católicos de todo el mundo pudieron exponer y discutir puntos de vista sobre este tema de tanta relevancia para la vida de la Iglesia católica.
 

Algunos laicos también pudieron participar como auditores. Uno de ellos fue Tommaso Spinelli, un joven italiano de 23 años que dejó con los ojos abiertos a todos los obispos presentes. Y es que Tommaso tiene claro que la evangelización pasa por los pastores, por los sacerdotes, de ahí que sus palabras hayan suscitado admiración y hayan dado materia para la reflexión.

No es lo habitual que un joven de 23 años les ponga las cosas claras a los obispos del mundo... ¿Qué fue lo que les dijo?, ¿qué es lo que espera un joven católico de la nueva evangelización? Este fue el discurso -por cierto muy breve- del participante más joven en el pasado Sínodo (una lectura especialmente recomendada para sacerdotes y personas consagradas):

"Mi reflexión quiere ser simplemente una ayuda para entender qué espera un joven de la nueva evangelización.

Vosotros sacerdotes -dirigiéndose a los obispos- habéis hablado sobre el papel de los laicos, yo que soy laico, quiero hablar a del papel de los sacerdotes.

Nosotros los jóvenes tenemos necesidad de guías fuertes, sólidos en su vocación y en su identidad. Es de vosotros, sacerdotes, de quien nosotros aprendemos a ser cristianos, y ahora que las familias están más desunidas, vuestro papel es todavía más importante para nosotros. Vosotros nos testimoniáis la fidelidad a una vocación, nos enseñáis la solidez en la vida y la posibilidad de elegir un modo alternativo de vivir, siendo éste más bello que el que nos propone la sociedad actual.

 Mi experiencia testimonia que allí donde hay un sacerdote apasionado la comunidad, en poco tiempo, florece. La fe no ha perdido atractivo, pero es necesario que existan personas que la muestren como una elección seria, sensata y creíble.

 

Lo que me preocupa es que estos modelos se han convertido en una minoría. El sacerdote ha perdido confianza en la importancia de su propio ministerio, ha perdido carisma y cultura. Veo sacerdotes que interpretan "dedicarse a los jóvenes" con "travestirse de joven" o, peor aún, vivir el estilo de vida de los jóvenes. Y lo mismo en la liturgia: en el intento de hacerse originales se convierten en insignificantes.

 

Os pido el coraje de ser vosotros mismos. No temáis, porque allí donde seáis auténticamente sacerdotes, allí donde propongáis sin miedo la verdad de la fe, allí donde no tengáis miedo de enseñarnos a rezar... nosotros los jóvenes os seguiremos. Hacemos nuestras las palabras de Pedro: "Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Sólo Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna". Nosotros tenemos hambre de lo eterno, de lo verdadero.

 

Por tanto, propongo:

1) Aumentar la formación, no sólo espiritual, sino también cultural de los sacerdotes. Con demasiada frecuencia vemos a sacerdotes que han perdido el papel de maestros de cultura que les hacía importantes para toda la sociedad. Hoy, si queremos ser creíbles y útiles, debemos volver a tener buenas herramientas culturales.

2) Redescubrir el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica en su carácter conciliar: en concreto la primera parte de cada sección, donde los documentos del Concilio iluminan los temas tradicionales. De hecho, el Catecismo pone con sabiduría como premisa a la explicación del Credo una parte inspirada en la Dei Verbum, en la que se explica la visión personalista de la revelación; a los sacramentos, la Sacrosantum Concilium, y a los mandamientos, la Lumen Gentium, que muestra al hombre creado a imagen de Dios. La primera parte de cada sección del Catecismo es fundamental para que el hombre de hoy sienta la fe como algo que le afecta de cerca y sea capaz de dar respuestas a sus preguntas más profundas.

3) Por último, la liturgia se olvida y se desacraliza con demasiada frecuencia: hay que volver a ponerla con dignidad en el centro de la comunidad parroquial.

Concluyo con las palabras que dieron inicio al nacimiento de la Europa Medieval: "Nosotros os queremos, dad prueba de vuestra santidad, del lenguaje correcto y de vuestra instrucción; de tal modo que cualquiera que vaya a vosotros se edifique con vuestro testimonio de vida y vuestra sabiduría (...) y regrese alegre dando gracias al Señor omnipotente" (De la carta Letteris Colendis de Carlo Magno al monasterio de Fulda, año 780). The information we're learning today about the Obama administration's incompetence and dishonesty surrounding the terrorist attack in Libya that cost four American lives, is breathtaking.

1. Requests for increased security for our Libyan consulate were ignored.

2. The consulate had been attacked twice prior to 9/11/12.

And now the Washington Post reports that…

3. After the ousting of Gaddafi from Libya, as Obama led from behind, al-Qaeda was able to get their hands on all kinds of weapons.

4. Prior to the 9/11/12 attack on our consulate, the Obama White House was so concerned with the growing al-Qaeda threat in North Africa (where Libya is), plans were considered for unilateral  military action:

The White House has held a series of secret meetings in recent months to examine the threat posed by al-Qaeda’s franchise in North Africa and consider for the first time whether to prepare for unilateral strikes, U.S. officials said.

The deliberations reflect concern that al-Qaeda’s African affiliate has become more dangerous since gaining control of large pockets of territory in Mali and acquiring weapons from post-revolution Libya. The discussions predate the Sept. 11 attacks on U.S. compounds in Libya but gained urgency after the assaults there were linked to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM.

U.S. officials said the discussions have focused on ways to help regional militaries confront al-Qaeda but have also explored the possibility of direct U.S. intervention if the terrorist group continues unchecked. …

White House officials declined to comment.

Two attacks  on the consulate, direct threats made by al-Qaeda in the days leading up to the attacks, and enough concern over a growing al-Qaeda threat in North Africa that military action was considered… And yet, we did absolutely nothing to increase the security around our consulate. Which translates into the fact that we did nothing to protect our human or intelligence assets in the region.

This is nothing short of criminal negligence. And the only question this new information answers is why, for over a week, the Obama White House lied about the attack being the result of a spontaneous protest gone bad.

Issa: Obama Admin Ignored Requests for Increased Security in Libya

Today, Reps. Issa and Chaffetz sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asking why requests for more protection at the Benghazi embassy were denied. Rep. Issa is the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee and Rep. Chaffetz is the Chairman of the subcommittee on National Security, Homeland Defense and Foreign Operations. The full committee will hold a hearing on October 10, 2012 to assess the security situation preceding the terrorist attack of September 11.

“Based on information provided to the Committee by individuals with direct knowledge of events in Libya, the attack that claimed the ambassador’s life was the latest in a long line of attacks on Western diplomats and officials in Libya in the months leading up to September 11, 2012. It was clearly never, as Administration officials once insisted, the result of a popular protest,” the committee’s chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and subcommittee chairman, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, write. “In addition, multiple U.S. federal government officials have confirmed to the Committee that, prior to the September 11 attack, the U.S. mission in Libya made repeated requests for increased security in Benghazi. The mission in Libya, however, was denied these resources by officials in Washington.”

The letter includes a long list of security concerns that occurred in Libya in the six months preceding the murder of Ambassador Stevens. Of particular concern is an attempt on the life of the British Ambassador that took place on June 10.

 June 10, 2012, BENGHAZI – On or about June 10, 2012, a two-car convoy carrying the British Ambassador to Libya from a conference on reforming Libyan military law was attacked in broad daylight by a militant with an RPG.  This attack was an important escalation in the violence against Western targets in Benghazi, as prior attacks had been at night and were often preceded by warnings from the attackers.  Photos from the aftermath of the attack are attached.

The committee has asked the state department to make the appropriate officials available for the hearing along with answers to the following questions:

1. Was State Department headquarters in Washington aware of all of the above incidents? If not, why not?
2. If so, what measures did the State Department take to match the level of security provided to the U.S. Mission in Libya to the level of threat?
3. Please detail any requests made by Embassy Tripoli to State Department headquarters for additional security, whether in general or in light of specific attacks mentioned above.  How did the Department respond to each of those requests?

Las recientes noticias sobre las desinversiones de la administración Obama en AIG y GM (en algunos casos con pérdidas de miles de millones de dólares) son un recordatorio de los privilegios y el clientelismo que inundan nuestra economía.
A medida que el favoritismo crece junto con el tamaño del gobierno, la libertad económica continúa siendo erosionada por normativas como los rescates financieros, las garantías de préstamo y las exenciones fiscales. Los privilegios han reemplazado a las buenas normativas en pro de la libertad en la economía pública. Pues la influencia de un grupo de elegidos está erosionando nuestros valores económicos e introduciendo ineficiencias e incentivos perversos que perjudican nuestra competitividad.

Esto es lo que argumentó Matthew Mitchell, del Centro Mercatus, en una reciente conferencia en la Fundación Heritage. El resultado ha sido el descenso de nuestra libertad económica. Pues todos deberían tener el derecho a competir dentro del mercado sobre la base de la igualdad.

Los líderes políticos de Estados Unidos tienen que representar a todos los americanos, no sólo a una élite privilegiada. Por tanto, necesitamos normativas que ayuden a todos los americanos, no sólo a los que se pueden permitir el tener cabilderos así como hacer grandes donaciones a las campañas electorales.

What Everest Teaches About Disease

Researchers are going to great lengths—or rather, great heights—to further their understanding of the heart, lungs and brain.
A team of Mayo Clinic scientists recently accompanied climbers to Mount Everest to study the effects of high altitude. And researchers from the University of Colorado, Denver, are planning a high-altitude research trip to Bolivia with 24 study participants.

In April and May, Mayo Clinic tents were set up at the Nepal base camp on Mount Everest, at an altitude of just under 18,000 feet. By studying climbers' responses to low oxygen levels, scientists hope to better treat heart disease and breathing disorders.

At high altitudes, the body's main challenge is dealing with low oxygen levels in blood or tissue, as well as lesser stresses involving diet, fluid, temperature and UV exposure.
For four weeks starting April 20, Mayo Clinic researchers were in Nepal taking physiological measurements of 10 climbers' hearts and lungs, as well as conducting sleep studies and cognitive performance tests on them.
The climbers spent six weeks at base camp, elevation 17,500 feet. The researchers, arriving from Rochester, Minn., elevation 1,300 feet, conducted the same assessments on themselves to compare results of those who had acclimatized with those who hadn't, says Bruce Johnson, Mayo professor of physiology and medicine who led the research. The expedition was sponsored by National Geographic and apparel maker the North Face, with support from Montana State University.
By studying the climbers, six of whom reached the summit, the researchers hope to gain insight into heart failure, lung disease and sleep apnea—all conditions related to a low-oxygen, or hypoxic, state. The longer people spend at extreme high altitude, the longer their bodies lack the needed amount of oxygen and the lower their energy—stresses similar to those caused by the diseases.
Conditions on Everest have been especially difficult this year because of the less-than-usual amount of snow and ice on the ground for climbers to dig into. There have been greater numbers of climbers at high camps waiting to attempt the summit, Dr. Johnson says. A high-altitude bottleneck of climbers played a role in the deaths of four climbers descending the summit earlier in May.
The proportion of oxygen in the air—21%—is constant whether at sea level or on the highest peak, but at lower altitudes there is more air pressure to force oxygen into tissue. At higher altitudes, where atmospheric pressure is lower, oxygen enters the body less readily, leading to the hypoxic state. Read More

Arizona Sheriff Not Backing Down On Obama Birth Issue

Unimpressed with state’s announcement on presidential Ballot

Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona, the man leading an investigation into the eligibility of the president, says he will not back down on the birther issue despite last week’s attempts by Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett to lay the controversy to rest.
Bennett said he was happy that an email from officials in Hawaii sent to him last week “proves President Obama’s American birth and satisfies Arizona’s requirements for having the president on the upcoming election ballot.”
Despite not having opened the email when questioned by reporters, Bennett apologized to critics who said he had “embarrassed the state” by suggesting the president may be kept off the ballot.
“I can now report to thousands of constituents that we did what can be done and [Obama] is qualified to be on the ballot,” Bennett said.
Sheriff Arpaio is somewhat unimpressed with Bennett’s back down however.
“That doesn’t impress me,” Arpaio told a New York talk radio host. “Why doesn’t [Bennett] ask for the birth certificate? The microfilm, look at the originals to see if it exists? … Just saying that there is some information about the president’s background doesn’t impress me.”
“I don’t know why it’s a big secret,” Arpaio added. “Why is just a letter coming out and saying, ‘Yes, we say that he was born there’? Show us the proof.”
“I just said from day one,” Arpaio continued, “I wanted to clear the president. I’m not accusing him of any crime; I just want to see the microfilm. We have two twins on the microfilm around the time the president was born. So let’s see the microfilm, let’s see the original copy of the birth certificate, then we’ll put this to rest. Read More

Flawed Pharma Study Demonizing Vitamins and Minerals Debunked

It seems that some people will do just about anything to get ahead, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise when a mostly falsified study is released to put down what is primarily known as a fundamentally healthy and intelligent choice.

Unfortunately, people still will try to spread discord amongst their fellow man in an apparent attempt to get ahead; sacrificing the good of the people is unfortunately a small price to pay for an insurmountably large personal gain, in many cases. This dishonest act can be seen in one such case of misinformation – a ‘study’ performed in order to bring the market for multivitamins and other very respectable health supplements down a notch.
In the article Iowa Women’s Health Study, much of the piece takes many things that are widely known as beneficial within a large number of vitamin supplements, and links some of these to various deaths in which people with diseases would essentially overdose themselves on vitamins in a desperate grab to fight off the disease. The article then discounts the fact that many people do not even use vitamins except for when they are sick, wrongfully linking an absurd amount of deaths directly to the use of vitamins and other supplements. As an example, a person was diagnosed with a life threatening disease, and in a sense of sheer panic began using as much as 40 supplements all at once, going up from using literally nothing the previous day. This example was then taken out of context and used as a source of evidence that supplements are in fact potentially deadly – a completely biased and ridiculous claim! Read More

El sábado por la noche, el activista legal chino, Chen Guancheng, ciego desde la infancia, llegó a Newark, Nueva Jersey, tras escapar a siete años de persecución en China. Con la dulce tierra de la libertad bajo sus pies, Chen respiró el aire libre y remarcó: “Deberíamos enlazar nuestros brazos para continuar en la lucha por la bondad en el mundo y para luchar contra la injusticia”. La recién encontrada libertad de Chen es un motivo de celebración, pero también es un recordatorio de que Estados Unidos debe seguir siendo una fuerza en pro de la libertad en el mundo, ya sea al otro lado del mundo o a 150 kilómetros de las costas de Florida.
Chen, abogado autodidacta de 40 años, estuvo encarcelado durante cuatro años, fue puesto bajo arresto domiciliario y sufrió palizas después de dar voz a la oposición contra la normativa de un solo hijo de la China comunista, que tiene como consecuencia abortos forzados por el gobierno, esterilizaciones bajo coacción y multas o abusos físicos contra los vecinos y familiares de las mujeres con embarazos no autorizados. El mes pasado, Chen escapó del control de las autoridades chinas y encontró refugio en la embajada de Estados Unidos. Después de una serie de negociaciones, Chen y sus familiares cercanos ganaron su libertad y ahora es un investigador de temas legales en la Escuela de Derecho de la Universidad de Nueva York.
El caso de Chen trae a la luz la realidad de la China de hoy en día: un país que ha sido transformado radicalmente durante los últimos 30 años gracias al desarrollo económico. La República Popular de China es una nación autoritaria y, sí,  “comunista”. Esta China es la realidad de cada día para Chen. Y es una realidad brutal para muchos cientos de millones más. Las relaciones entre Estados Unidos y China nunca serán normales mientras el régimen chino sea como es.

Obama’s Ironic European Lecture

Europe is in bad shape, there’s no doubt about it. The sovereign debt crisis continues to roil the continent, Greece may leave the euro, Spain may have to revise its budget deficit upward for the second time because of bad loans, and France has a new socialist president pledging more spending instead of austerity. So when the G8 leaders met last week, President Obama had some words of advice to offer — “Look at me and learn from my stellar example!”
OK, that’s a paraphrase, but his actual words aren’t all that much different. No joke, the president who has presided over a downgraded credit rating, three years without a budget, an exploding deficit, an entitlement system desperately in need of reform, and an unemployment rate still over 8 percent has painted himself as a model for others to follow.
Quite remarkably, the president bragged that he has worked to “bring down our deficits and debt over the longer term” while staying “focused on growing the economy and creating jobs in the immediate term.” Though he acknowledges that “Of course, we still have a lot of work to do,” he says that now there’s “room to take a balanced approach to reducing our deficit and debt, while preserving our investments in the drivers of growth and job creation over the long term — education, innovation, and infrastructure for the 21st century.”
In other words, because of his supposed successes, America can afford to spend even more money on stimulus.
It’s hard to say whether the president’s intended audience was the leaders of the G8 or the American electorate, but regardless of who it was, there’s not much for Obama to brag about.
In the past four years, unemployment has gone up, more people are unemployed longer, gas prices are higher, the cost of health care insurance has increased, the national debt is higher, federal spending has increased, more Americans are on food stamps, regulatory costs are higher, home values have declined, America’s economic recovery is historically slow, and while federal spending on education has increased, results remain flat. Though Europe needs solutions, they certainly shouldn’t be looking at President Obama for the answers.

Forget Bain — Obama’s public-equity record is the real scandal

Despite a growing backlash from his fellow Democrats, President Obama has doubled down on his attacks on Mitt Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital. But the strategy could backfire in ways Obama did not anticipate. After all, if Romney’s record in private equity is fair game, then so is Obama’s record in public equity — and that record is not pretty.
Since taking office, Obama has invested billions of taxpayer dollars in private businesses, including as part of his stimulus spending bill. Many of those investments have turned out to be unmitigated disasters — leaving in their wake bankruptcies, layoffs, criminal investigations and taxpayers on the hook for billions. Consider just a few examples of Obama’s public equity failures:

● Raser Technologies. In 2010, the Obama administration gave Raser a $33 million taxpayer-funded grant to build a power plant in Beaver Creek, Utah. According to the Wall Street Journal, after burning through our tax dollars, the company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2012. The plant now has fewer than 10 employees, and Raser owes $1.5 million in back taxes.
● ECOtality. The Obama administration gave ECOtality $126.2 million in taxpayer money in 2009 for, among other things, the installation of 14,000 electric car chargers in five states. Obama even hosted the company’s president, Don Karner, in the first lady’s box during the 2010 State of the Union address as an example of a stimulus success story. According to ECOtality’s own SEC filings, the company has since incurred more than $45 million in losses and has told the federal government, “We may not achieve or sustain profitability on a quarterly or annual basis in the future.” READ MORE
